Local we Love: Beth Maloney, founder of Summer Hours Fragrances

In 2021, Fairfield local Beth Maloney was searching for a fresh, summer-inspired fragrance that was made with clean ingredients, and left empty-handed. In a moment of inspiration, Maloney decided to create her own fragrance collection, and Summer Hours was born.

In less than two years, the brand has garnered features in Travel + Leisure, Vogue, and more, and the line is carried by The Four Seasons and Auberge hotels.

Here, we chat with Maloney about her company, how she ended up in Fairfield, and her favorite spots around town.

In a few sentences, describe your business.

BM: Summer Hours is a fragrance-first brand inspired by the desire to linger longer in the essence of the season. It’s based here in Fairfield and all of our products are made in the United States.

Why and when did you start Summer Hours?

BM: My background is in strategic marketing and creative direction. I spent my career helping other people’s businesses and projects be successful—but I’d always wanted to start my own business. The timing was finally right in the summer of 2021.

How did you get into fragrance? What drew you to it?

BM: A few years ago I realized I couldn’t find any scents—made from clean ingredients—that were light, fresh, and summery. None were luxurious and most didn’t smell great. I wondered if there were others out there that were looking for the same criteria in their perfume. That wondering led to the creation of Summer Hours.

What’s unique about your products?

BM: We launched the brand with four eau de parfums—80°, LE WEEK END, ROMANESQUE, and NEW WAVE—made from clean ingredients. The response has been fantastic—Summer Hours has been featured in Vogue, Travel & Leisure, People, CTC&G, and more. Last November we launched a complementary line of candles. They’re contained in colorful, hand blown glass tumblers which are easily repurposed back into cocktail glasses. The candles are a really great, locally-made gift.

Where can Summer Hours be purchased?

BM: All of our products are available on summer-hours.com. They’re also stocked at select indie boutiques (goop, The Beehive) and luxury hotels (Four Seasons, Auberge Resorts) around the country.

How did you end up in the Fairfield area?

BM: My husband and I both grew up in small towns on the water so Fairfield felt like a great place to raise our boys. We moved here from NYC over a decade ago and remain happy with our decision.

What places / businesses in the area do you love?

Fairfield Beaches

We’re lucky to have five public beaches in Fairfield and each has its merits. Sasco is a favorite for sunset cocktails.

Fairfield American Little League

My sons love playing baseball and it’s largely because of the excellence of the programs offered by this volunteer organization.

Fairfield Theatre Company

Walking out of my house to go see Tom Tom Club perform Genius of Love sealed my affection for this gem of a venue.
